PONGAL - WOO HOO!!

It is Pongal here.   This is the second biggest celebration in Tamil Nadu after Diwali.

Truth be told we are not quite sure what Pongal is beyond a 'Tamil harvest festival', but it is a three day festival where everything gets closed and there are big parties everywhere.  We went to a big community potluck at Johnny's (he is an Australian, a real Auroville old timer). Johnny came to Auroville in this 1970's and is the creator of the now famous 'Johnny Capsule' - the type of treehouse that we stayed in at Evergreen Community.

Then all the kids (and some adults too) piled into the cart - and went for a wild ride pulled by the bulls. Lili was there with bells on of course!

...and they are off! During the ride, the tradition is that the riders get sprinkled with cow urine! This was done, but to Lili's relief we told her that it was only water dyed with turmeric.

It was great fun. It should be noted that we are here in Indian mid-winter (the temperatures are way way hotter in summer). So we are not quite sure why harvest would be celebrated in non harvest time - but we are not ones to pick on insignificant details. At least in a place as organically fluid as India!!!

Happy Pongal!
